A hernia occurs when tissue or an organ protrudes through a weak area in the abdominal wall. Hernias are classified based on location. Umbilical, inguinal, ventral, and incisional are common types. Some hernias are spontaneous and can be the result of excessive straining. Hernias can form in the site of a prior surgical incision. Surgical repair can usually be done with minimally invasive techniques, reducing pain and shortening recovery.
The primary goal of oncologic surgery is to diagnose, treat, and manage cancer through surgical procedures. This can involve removing tumors, assessing the extent of cancer (staging), and performing surgeries to improve quality of life. Many cancers can be treated with advanced surgical techniques that allow removal with less postoperative pain than traditional open surgery. Cancer treatment can be complex. Our approach involves a multidisciplinary team of physicians, including oncologists who specialize in chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This helps deliver an individualized and tailored plan of treatment for each patient. We use a team approach to deliver the same level of care found at major institutions across the country.
The gallbladder is one the most common causes of abdominal pain in the United States. This can be a result of gallstones, infection, or inflammation. Gallbladder problems are usually treated with removal of the gallbladder, also known as cholecystectomy. Cholecystectomy is one of the most common surgeries performed by general surgeons. We use a minimally invasive surgical technique to minimize pain and reduce recovery time. The surgery is typically performed as an outpatient surgery.
Robotic surgery is a surgeon-controlled system using small instruments to perform surgery through small incisions. Robotic surgery provides enhanced operative technique and visualization. This cutting-edge technology has expanded the range of surgeries that can be performed with a minimally invasive approach. Robotic surgery helps minimize surgical risk, reduce post-operative discomfort, and decrease recovery time.
Colorectal surgery involves diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. Our surgeons treat a wide variety of colon and rectal conditions including cancers, non-cancerous masses, and diverticular disease. We also treat diseases of the anus such as hemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulas.
The appendix is a small organ attached to the colon that has no known purpose. It can become infected, and when this happens, it is usually surgically removed. This is a very common condition treated by our surgeons, who perform operations on all stages of disease, ranging from uncomplicated infections to more difficult conditions such as rupture and abscess.
Acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a common condition caused when acid from the stomach enters into the esophagus. Our surgeons offer a wide range of anti-reflux surgeries to treat this condition. These can often be treated with minimally invasive surgery and include hiatal hernia repair and Nissen fundoplication. These surgeries involve repositioning the stomach into its normal location and tightening the top portion of the stomach to prevent gastric contents from entering the esophagus.
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women. One in eight women in the United States will have breast cancer in their lifetime. Due to advances in breast cancer screening, breast cancer is typically diagnosed with breast imaging. Our surgeons provide comprehensive breast care, including surgery for both breast cancer and benign (non-cancerous) diseases. Lumpectomy and mastectomy are two main surgical options. The type and extent of surgery depends on cancer staging, the location of the tumor, and the patient’s personal preferences. We also offer in-office procedures to biopsy breast masses or lesions. Our physicians work closely with local oncologists to provide treatment based on up-to-date national guidelines and studies. We also collaborate with plastic surgeons, if breast reconstruction is needed.
Melanoma, squamous, and basal cell are common skin cancers. Treatment is usually surgery to remove the cancer and surrounding tissue. Often, nearby lymph nodes are also removed to ensure the cancer has not spread to that area.
Certain skin conditions, such as lipomas (fatty tumors), cysts, and abscesses, can be treated with removal and drainage. Sometimes these procedures can be performed in our office using numbing medicine. This eliminates the need for general anesthesia and the operating room.
